Celebrarán su 50 aniversario retirándose de los escenarios
La banda británica The Who prevé retirarse de los escenarios en 2015 con una gira que conmemorará su 50 aniversario, publica hoy la revista New Musical Express (NME).
El guitarrista Pete Townshend, de 68 años, desveló los planes del grupo responsable de temas populares como "My generation" (1965) durante la presentación del documental "Sensation", que narra la creación de la ópera-rock "Tommy" (1969).
The Who ha ofrecido este año diversos conciertos en el Reino Unido e Irlanda en los que interpretó algunos de los temas clásicos de su doble álbum "Quadrophenia" (1973).
La banda del Reino Unido, formada originalmente por Townshend, el cantante Roger Daltrey, el baterista Keith Moon y el bajista John Entwistle, fue uno de los primeros grupos en lanzar al mercado álbumes de ópera-rock de larga duración.
El popular grupo fue uno de los protagonistas de la ceremonia de clausura de los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres en 2012, un homenaje a la música moderna británica.
The Who interpretó en directo "My Generation", el tema con el que irrumpió en las listas de éxitos en los años sesenta, y estuvo también presentes a través de Kaiser Chiefs, uno de los grupos del nuevo brit-pop, que ofrecieron su propia versión del clásico "Pinball Wizard", del disco "Tommy".
Daltrey y Townshend han continuado trabajando juntos tras la muerte de Entwistle, en 2002, a los 57 años, y de Moon, en 1978, a los 32 años.
