ELO Performs First Concert in 28 Years,

Legendary Birmingham musician Jeff Lynne made a triumphant return to the stage for his first full show on UK soil for nearly 30 years.

The famed singer, songwriter and producer was headlining a BBC Radio 2 ‘‘festival in a day’’, which also featured Blondie, Paloma Faith, Chrissie Hynde and Billy Ocean.

Accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra and original ELO pianist Richard Tandy, Jeff opened with the disco-tinged All Over The World and the hits came thick and fast including Livin Thing, Evil Woman and Showdown.

Jeff was still able to hit those high notes and his voice was soft as velvet on slower numbers Strange Magic and Can't Get It Out Of My Head.

A surprise inclusion was the Traveling Wilburys hit Handle With Care which Jeff dedicated to former bandmates Roy Orbison and George Harrison.

Turn To Stone, Don't Bring Me Down and signature tune Mr Blue Sky went down a storm and Jeff seemed overwhelmed at the response to the 80 minute set.

Formed in Birmingham in 1972, the Electric Light Orchestra went on to become one of the most successful bands of the 1970s and 80s with a run of 26 top 40 singles.

After reprising a couple of ELO songs for Children In Need late last year Jeff was flooded with offers for concerts, including a six-night stint at London’s giant O2 Arena.

Talking to the Mail in May, the Hollywood-based 66-year-old said he wouldn’t commit to any live dates, explaining that he’d always prefered working in the studio to playing live.

Shard End-raised Jeff was in Birmingham at the time to receive an honorary doctorate from Birmingham City University and a place on the Broad Street Walk of Stars.

"We've been rehearsing for a month. To start with it was like wearing a pair of old boots but after three weeks it felt like a comfortable pair of slippers.

"I'm looking forward to it but I'm nervous because I haven't done it for such a long time. But the thing is the tunes are still intact and I'm gonna play them like I did in the past."

But will fans have to wait another three decades to see him again or will he consider a tour?

Jeff said: "My manager always wants me to go on tour. We've been talking about it. If today goes well and Richard and I really enjoy it I will certainly look at how to do a tour of Britain. I would love it."

And, if so, would a Birmingham show be at the forefront of his thinking?

"It certainly would because they have been very good to me in Birmingham. I had the time of my life there in March," said Jeff.

And that will be music to the ears of his adoring Birmingham public.

The concert is being broadcast on the BBC iPlayer and on its Red Button channel until Friday.

Slowhand considers retirement after one more album

Eric Clapton is considering retirement after making one more album, he's revealed.

Slowhand has been speaking about ending his career for some time now, and recently announced to fans in Japan they'd seen him for the last time.

Now he tells Rolling Stone: "I think this could be it. I don't want to work that hard any more. I was planning to write and record another record, so that's the next thing I would do.

The 69-year-old admits he's finding it more and more difficult to "stay healthy, agile and energetic" to the standards required for touring, and adds: "Most evenings, if I'm not playing, I'm watching TV and in bed by 10 o'clock."

And he says he's become "lazy" when trying to write songs. "When I get to 'What am I going to do for that bit?' I stop and turn on the TV. I'm easily distracted. What I've done is written a lot of songs, then forgotten them. I put them down as a voice-memo on my phone, then I lose the memo."

Clapton's most recent release was The Breeze, a tribute to the late JJ Cale, which he says was "a joy." Asked if he's running out of things to say, he admits: "That would come. The music, that's difficult. That's why I love JJ's writing – there are complex details going on. That's what writing music is about: 'What can I do with these chords that's interesting and unique?'"

The Outfield's John Spinks Dead at 60

The Outfield's guitarist and songwriter John Spinks died on Wednesday after a long battle with liver cancer. The melodic rock group enjoyed a string of top 40 hits in the 1980s. He was 60 years old.
The band's biggest hit "Your Love" hit no. 6 on the singles chart and helped propel their debut album, "Play Deep," to multi-platinum sales status in the U.S. The band's latest album was 2011's "Replay."

The band broke the sad news to fans with the following Facebook post: "It is with great sadness to inform you that John passed away at 09.55 on Wednesday 9th July 2014. He was 60 years old. As many of you know, he had been suffering from liver cancer for many years and bravely fought the disease until the very end. We are relieved that his passing was peaceful and painless.

"John was a loving husband, inspirational father, doting grandfather and gifted songwriter. His musical career started from a very young age and he wanted more than anything for people to listen and enjoy his music. He passed away knowing he achieved his ambition.

"If it were possible, we know John would have liked to have thanked each and every fan of The Outfield personally. He admired and respected the emails from thousands of loyal followers who commented on his music and enquired about his health. This alone, gave him motivation to battle through the sometimes dark days.

"We would like to thank you for 'Your Love' and the continued support you have given John throughout his career. He loved making music and playing his guitar. He found pleasure knowing that his music made people happy and bought them fond memories. He worked hard with many days in pain to finish the Replay album. There were times when he could barely pick up his guitar, but he refused to give up knowing he would disappoint fans. The hardest day for John was when he put his guitar in its case announcing his hands could no longer play.

"During the last months of his life, John, Tony and Alan wrote new material. What the future holds for this is unclear at the time of this writing.

"There is so much more we could say, but for now, we would like to grieve the loss of John.

"God bless you all.

El guitarrista John Spinks de The Outfield falleció el día de hoy y esto fue lo que sus compañeros compartieron con su gente.

John falleció a las 9:55am el día de hoy, miércoles 09 de julio 2014. Tenía 60 años de edad. Como muchos de ustedes saben, había estado sufriendo de cáncer de hígado durante muchos años y valientemente luchó contra la enfermedad hasta el final. Estamos aliviados de que su muerte fue pacífica y sin dolor. John era un buen esposo, padre inspirador, abuelo cariñoso y compositor muy talentoso. Su carrera musical comenzó a partir de una edad muy joven y quería más que nada para la gente para escuchar y disfrutar de su música. Murió sabiendo que logró su ambición. Si fuera posible, sabemos que John hubiera gustado haber dado las gracias a todos y cada fan de The Outfield personalmente. Admiraba y respetaba los correos electrónicos de miles de fieles seguidores que hicieron comentarios sobre su música y le preguntó por su salud. Esto por sí solo, le dio la motivación para la batalla a través de los días a veces oscuros.

Nos gustaría darle las gracias por "Tu Amor" y el continuo apoyo que ha dado a Juan a lo largo de su carrera. Le encantaba hacer música y tocar la guitarra. Encontró el placer de saber que su música hace feliz a la gente y les compró buenos recuerdos. Trabajó duro con muchos días de dolor para terminar el álbum Replay. Iconic Hotel California Solo Nearly Didn't Happen
 Don Felder says Hotel California's acclaimed guitar solo very nearly didn't happen. The former guitarist with The Eagles recorded a demo of the song a full year before the band recorded the album - also called Hotel California - in 1977.

When he turned up for recording sessions, he began playing a different solo, only for drummer Don Henley to call a halt to proceedings and insist he play exactly the same thing he had done on the demo.

The song is often voted as having the best guitar solo of all time. Felder tells Rock Cellar: "On the demo I changed guitars and played one lick and kind of duelled with myself between a Strat and a Les Paul. When we went into the studio to record the solo, Joe Walsh and I set up and to play the ending on the record. I started and played a lick and Don Henley went 'stop, that's not right.' And I said 'what do you mean it's not right, we're just gonna make these solos up.'

Franny Beecher fue el guitarrista principal de la banda
 

El músico tenía 92 años. Uno de las canciones más famosas de la banda fue Rock Around the Clock
Franny Beecher, el guitarrista principal de Bill Haley y los Comets que ayudó a lanzar la era del rock and roll con el éxito "Rock Around the Clock" en 1955, falleció. Tenía 92 años.

Beecher murió el lunes por la noche mientras dormía en una residencia para ancianos cerca de Filadelfia, dijo el martes su hija, Pauline Grinstead.

Fallece el genio de la guitarra Paco de Lucía

El guitarrista Paco de Lucía (Algeciras, 1947) ha fallecido hoy, según han informado fuentes del ayuntamiento de su localidad natal.

Según ha informado el gabinete de prensa del ayuntamiento, el fallecimiento se lo ha confirmado a ese consistorio el sobrino del artista, Ramón Sánchez, hijo de Ramón de Algeciras.

Paco de Lucía, según informaron otras fuentes, podría haber fallecido en Cancún (México) de un infarto, mientras jugaba con sus hijos en la playa.

El artista era Premio Príncipe de Asturias de las Artes y emblema, junto con Camarón de la Isla, de la renovación y difusión mundial del flamenco.

Francisco Sánchez Gómez, de nombre artístico Paco de Lucía, había inyectado al flamenco a lo largo de su larga trayectoria ritmos como el jazz, la "bossa nova" e incluso la música clásica.

Discípulo de Niño Ricardo y de Sabicas, y respetado por músicos de jazz, rock o "blues" por su personal estilo, logró, entre otros muchos reconocimientos, un Grammy al mejor álbum flamenco 2004; el Premio Nacional de Guitarra de Arte Flamenco; la Medalla de Oro al Mérito de las Bellas Artes 1992; el Premio Pastora Pavón La Niña de los Peines 2002; y el honorífico de los Premios de la Música 2002.

Canción andaluza , disco póstumo de Paco de Lucía

El guitarrista Paco de Lucía ha fallecido hoy a los 66 años sin llegar a ver publicada su última obra, "Canción andaluza" , un disco de coplas que debía lanzarse a finales de abril, según han confirmado diversas fuentes.

Grabado en varias localizaciones, muchas de ellas en España, el que quedará como su álbum póstumo atravesaba una de sus últimas fases de preparación, guardado "en un cajón" mientras se ultimaba la portada, después de que el artista pasara las últimas Navidades en suelo español ocupado en el proceso de mezclas.

El que será el sucesor de "En vivo" (2011) y "Cositas buenas" (2004) , Grammy Latino al mejor álbum de flamenco, reflejará cómo veía De Lucía el mundo de la copla, género del que se empapó en su infancia en Andalucía y que, según relataría, tuvo "una importancia vital" en su música.

"La canción española ha tenido compositores de una inspiración increíble, como el maestro Quiroga o el maestro Solano" , destacaba el guitarrista durante una participación en 1978 en el programa de TVE "Cantares" , en el que recordaba a Marifé de Triana, Juanita Reina y Conchita Piquer como la banda sonora de su niñez.

De Lucía, que ya entonces lamentaba que dentro del género se había "especulado demasiado con el 'mi arma', el salero y la gracia, quitándole su profundidad real" , apostaba por que resurgiera con compositores y cantantes que la actualizaran y le devolvieran su carácter, un empeño al que terminó dedicándose él mismo en sus últimos años de vida.

Recibió, entre otros muchos galardones, el Premio Nacional de Guitarra de Arte Flamenco, la Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes (1992), la Distinción Honorífica de los Premios de la Música (2002), el Premio Príncipe de Asturias de las Artes (2004).4 Fue Doctor Honoris Causa por la Universidad de Cádiz5 y por el Berklee College of Music, distinción concedida en mayo de 2010.

Def Leppard singer to produce Black Star Riders sophomore album

Def Leppard singer Joe Elliott will produce the sophomore album by Thin Lizzy off-shoot Black Star Riders, the band announced Monday.

Black Star Riders will enter the studio in Dublin, Ireland in October to start recording the follow-up to 2013’s “All Hell Breaks Loose” with Elliott and Def Leppard emgineer Ronan McHugh.

“Joe Elliott's passion, enthusiasm for music, as a fan, artist and friend is unquestionable and Ronan McHugh is a phenomenal engineer,” says singer Ricky Warwick. “Personally having worked with these guys before, it was a no brainer when they said they would like to produce the new BSR album. We are confident that this will be a huge leap forward in the evolution of BSR.”

“Having worked with [guitarist] Scott [Gorham] on the Thin Lizzy remixes a few years ago & having produced Ricky’s 1st 2 solo albums, I’m looking forward to taking our musical journey together even further,” adds Elliott. “We’re aiming to make a serious leap forward with the next album & I’m proud to be able to contribute to the next chapter in the BSR story.

The new, as yet untitled, album will be released in the spring of 2015 .

In the meantime, Black Star Riders will play a Japanese tour in May, with a series of summer shows to be announced.

Tickets for the Japanese concerts go on sale February 7.

The former members of Thin Lizzy rebranded themselves as Black Star Riders late in 2012 but continue to perform material from their old group.

Joe Elliot (Def Leppard) produce a Black Star Riders

Black Star Riders, la banda formada con ex miembros de Thin Lizzy, lanzaron su primer álbum “All Hell Breaks Loose” el año pasado. Después de una exitosa gira, la banda se está preparando para grabar su segundo trabajo. Joe Elliot, de Def Leppard, se ha convertido en el productor de la banda. Elliot trabajó previamente en la reedición del “Jailbreak” de Thin Lizzy en 2011, así como la producción de los dos primeros álbumes en solitario del cantante de Black Star Riders, Ricky Warwick.

Warwick habló sobre la participación de Elliot en un comunicado de la banda: “La pasión de Joe Elliott, el entusiasmo por la música, como fan, artista y amigo es incuestionable y Ronan McHugh es un ingeniero fenomenal. Personalmente después de haber trabajado con estos chicos antes, no hubo duda cuando dijeron que les gustaría producir el nuevo álbum de BSR . Estamos seguros de que este será un gran paso adelante en la evolución de BSR”.

Aparte de Warwick, Black Star Riders se compone del batería Jimmy DeGrasso, los guitarristas Scott Gorham y Damon Johnson y el bajista Marco Mendoza. El álbum está programado para ser lanzado en la primavera de 2015.

Schenker finally loves playing live
 Michael Schenker only started enjoying being on stage a few years ago, he’s revealed.

The guitar icon believes his current band, Temple Of Rock, marks the third stage of his career after previous periods included his time with UFO and the Scorpions.

And his new lease of life includes finally having fun during live performances – something he couldn’t say about his past.

Schenker tells Bravewords: “The first stage was to develop as a great guitarist and focus on pure self-expression, and that finished around the end of UFO.

“I opened the doors to Scorpions with Lovedrive, then when I was through I started Michael Schenker Group for experimenting, to develop musically as well as on a personal level.

“Around 2007 I started to develop the incredible liking of being on stage, which I never really had before. I was never keen on being on stage – I was more fascinated with playing guitar.

“I was fragile when I was a teenager, but I guess that’s my design. The beginning is rock’n'roll, the middle I do personal work, and in the end I celebrate my life and my generation’s rock.”

Schenker is gearing up to tour new album Bridge The Gap, featuring singer Doogie White, long-time collaborator Wayne Findlay and fellow ex-Scorpions Herman Rarebell and Francis Buchholz.

And despite being open to the influences of his bandmates, he still doesn’t allow himself to listen to music that comes from outside his direct sphere.

“I still want to be loyal to expressing from within,” he says. “I think this is what I was called to do. It creates a special outcome – I don’t see any reason why I should give that up.”

Schenker se está preparando para una gira nuevo disco puente sobre las diferencias, con el cantante Doogie White, antiguo colaborador Wayne Findlay y compañero ex Scorpions Herman Rarebell y Francis Buchholz.
