Sabbath, Zeppelin and McCartney win Grammys
Black Sabbath won the Best Metal Performance Grammy at last night’s annual award ceremony, while Led Zeppelin won the Best Rock Album category.
God Is Dead?, from 13, Sabbath’s acclaimed reunion album with Ozzy Osbourne, headed off competition from Anthrax, Dream Theater, Killswitch Engage and Volbeat. It’s the band’s second Grammy after they won the same category for their classic track Iron Man in 2000, three decades after its original release.
Zeppelin’s Celebration Day finally won the iconic band an individual Grammy – until now they’d only received a lifetime achievement gong from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Recorded at the band’s historic reunion show in 2007, the record beat David Bowie’s surprise comeback The Next Day and Kings Of Leon’s Mechanical Bull, Queens Of The Stone Age’s …Like Clockwork and Neil Young with Crazy Horse’s Psychedelic Pill.
McCartney was the biggest rock winner of the night, leaving with a total of five Grammys. He accepted a lifetime achievement award alongside Beatles bandmate Ringo Star, and also won Best Rock Song with Cut Me Some Slack, his collaboration with the surviving members of Nirvana. His 2012 release Live Kisses was named Best Surround Sound Album and Best Music Film, while the recent deluxe edition of Wings Over America won Best Boxed Or Limited Edition Package.
Imagine Dragons won Best Rock Performance for their track Radioactive, against competition from Alabama Shakes, Bowie, Zeppelin, QOTSA and Jack White. Other winners included Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl for his Sound City soundtrack, and blues collaborators Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite. The Rolling Stones and Bill Withers tied in the Best Historical Album category.
The Grammys ceremony, which took place at Los Angeles’ Staples Centre, featured performances by Metallica with classical pianist Lang Lang, McCartney and Starr − who played a new song instead of the expected Beatles classic – Nine Inch Nails and QOTSA, Lindsey Buckinham of Fleetwood Mac, Imagine Dragons and blues guitarist Gary Clark Jr.
