U2 to receive Sonny Bono Visionary Award
U2 will be honored with the Sonny Bono Visionary Award at the 25th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) this weekend.
The band will receive the honor at the event’s Awards Gala on Saturday, January 4 at the Palm Springs Convention Center; the Festival runs January 3-13.
“We normally present the Sonny Bono Visionary Award to a director, but for our 25th anniversary we wanted to take the occasion to celebrate U2, a visionary group and the world’s premier rock band, for their unparalleled humanitarian work against extreme poverty, disease, and social injustice,” said Festival Chairman Harold Matzner. “Their latest song ‘Ordinary Love’ from the film Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom is an ode to Nelson Mandela, who had such a powerful impact on our world, and a man whom the band worked with in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa. The Palm Springs International Film Festival is honored to present the 2014 Sonny Bono Visionary Award to U2.”
Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom chronicles the inspirational life of Nelson Mandela as an international icon and one of the world’s most revered leaders. The film spans Mandela’s exceptional life journey from his early years as a herd boy in South Africa’s rural Cape region, to his days as a lawyer and Apartheid resistance leader, and on to his twenty-seven years spent in Robben Island prison before becoming the nation’s first democratically elected President. Acclaimed actor Idris Elba stars, with Naomie Harris playing the role of his wife Winnie Mandela.
The song “Ordinary Love” from the film was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in the Best Original Song category for a Motion Picture, as well as a nominee for Best Song from the Broadcast Film Critics Association’s Critics Choice Movie Awards.
U2 have been working on a new album which is expected to be released in the spring of 2014.
U2 estrena video de la banda sonora del film 'Mandela'
U2 ha presentado a través de su web oficial el videoclip que acompañará a su tema "Ordinary love", uno de los dos inéditos que ha incluido en la banda sonora original de la película "Mandela: Long walk to freedom", en torno a la figura del ex mandatario sudafricano.
Su nueva producción ha sido dirigida por Oliver Jeffers y Mac Premo, responsables también de la primera versión del videoclip, que seguía el formato de los llamados "lyric videos" (aquellos en los que las imágenes reproducen la letra de la canción), aunque esta vez la banda irlandesa sí aparece en varias escenas.
Su lanzamiento llega como soporte de la versión de "Ordinary Love" que ha hecho el productor Paul Epworth (responsable, entre otros trabajos, de "21" de Adele) y promoción de la recién estrenada película sobre Nelson Mandela, en cuya BSO puede escucharse el tema "Breath", también de U2.
Además, sirve para calentar aún más las expectativas en torno al nuevo álbum de U2, sucesor de "No Line on the Horizon" (2009), del que se espera algún tipo de anticipo a modo de gran anuncio durante la próxima retransmisión de la final de la Superbowl en EE.UU., que tendrá lugar en febrero.
