Rodriguez-Lopez And Frusciante Reveal Supergroup

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez has left former band The Mars Volta far behind him, and formed a supergroup called Kimono Kult with ex-colleague and former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante.

Hear their debut track Todo Menos El Dolor below, taken from their four-track EP Hiding In The Light which is on sale now.

The band also features Rodriguez-Lopez’s Bosnian Rainbows bandmate Teri Gender Bender on lead vocals, plus guitarist Dante White, string playes Laena Geronimo and drummer Nicole Turley.

Gender Bender says Kimono Kult had a good reason for continuing to write lyrics in Spanish, as she’d done with Bosnian Rainbows’ most recent work. She tells Rolling Stone: “There’s so much left to explore. Because Spanish-speaking singers are strict with so many unspoken rules, I approached my mother language as if I were an alien from outer space. That was the mindset.”

Of the debut track, which translates as Everything, Anything but the Pain, she explains: “The lyric is for the listener’s imagination – it goes way beyond language and it’s more about atmosphere. To me it could be a story about an alien that wanted to eat cats, but it caused the critter so much pain that he became a vegetarian. Every interpretation is valid.”
